This is a topic for the ones who don't know what to upgrade of their staff and want to do it the best of their possibilities.
There are four things which are important in Apprentice staffs: damage (thanks Capt obvious), shoots, projectile speed and charge speed.
Because talking about damage is useless, I think, I will argue about the three other things, making you understand why they are important.
Shoots: the most important thing. Upgrade it everytime you can, until it reachs 5, and don't think the staff is fine if it has no additional shoots. No no no.
The more shoots it fires, the more dps you do, simply because every shoot has the power of the original one.
Oculus w/ 5 shoots = the original shoot + FIVE others more that has the power of the original. Absurd. No reduced power, no disadvantages, only profit.
Projectile speed: yes, the poor yellow arrow. Simply the shoots need to reach the enemies the faster they can, because if they are slow, you will never rapidly beat the enemy in question, even if you do crazy awesome dps. It should be on around +1000, and you can reach that stat with few upgrades.
Charge speed: You already know that, if you keep press the button for the shoot, the shoot in question will be more powerful. Well, charge speed reduce drastically the time you have time to press the button, allowing you to do more damage compared to staffs that have little charge speed.
You will not do greater damages, simply at around 60-70 it will allow you to charge the shoots very fast (or even unleash powerful ones randomly, without even thinking).
